When Twitter Goes Wrong – The George Zimmerman Address Tweet

WARNING: The Killer of Trayvon Martin DOES NOT LIVE AT 159 Edgewater Circle!!!!!

The other day, Spike Lee tweeted the address to George W. Zimmerman’s house. Why did Spike Lee tweet the address? He, like many of us, was upset about the killing of Trayvon Martin by a man named George Michael Zimmerman. That doesn’t make any sense now, does it? Spike Lee re-tweeted a tweet with the address for a man with a different name, a house owned by an elderly couple living in Florida named McClain who have no relationship with the shooter George M. Zimmerman. Spike Lee tweeted the wrong name of the killer and the wrong address. I’m not a lawyer, but at the least, it sounds like reckless endangerment.

How did all this happen? You can read about it here. Great research and great article.

How many of you who have re-tweeted the tweet with an incorrect address really want to inflict harm on the elderly couple? What if Spike Lee tweets your grandma’s address next. How are you going to feel?

.

To incite violence against someone is lynch mob justice. If someone had killed the couple living in the house, it’s not beyond belief for you to be charged as an accessory to murder if the killers could be traced back to your RT. Be careful what you do on Twitter. The purpose of Twitter is not to send out mobs to houses and have people killed, no matter what Spike Lee might tweet. Of couse, some of you may have just got caught up in the mob mentality that is now circulating on Twitter and in the media.

People are now fighting back against @SpikeLee. Some of the tweets aren’t very nice but others just seek his apology for the elderly couple whose address he tweeted incorrectly.

As of 9:27 a.m. on Wednesday morning, people are still tweeting the wrong address out to their followers at a rate of at least 2 every minute. Come on Spike Lee, do the right thing and call off the mob already.
